Jameos del Agua
Lanzarote
Beneath the surface of Lanzarote lies one of the longest volcanic tubes in the world: the Tunnel of Atlantis, formed by the eruptions of the La Corona volcano about 3,000 years ago. Two of its sections have become two of the most extraordinary spaces on the island — and on the planet — thanks to the vision of César Manrique: Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes.
Jameos del Agua: where art dialogues with nature
Manrique transformed this section of the volcanic tube into a cultural space of breathtaking beauty. As visitors descend, they encounter a natural interior lake inhabited by the famous jameítos — tiny blind and albino crabs that exist only in this place on the planet. Beyond, a pool of turquoise waters surrounded by palm trees and volcanic rock creates a scene that seems taken from a dream.
The complex includes an underground auditorium with exceptional acoustics where concerts are held, a restaurant, and the Casa de los Volcanes, a volcanological research center. Every detail — from the lighting to the landscaping — reflects Manrique's philosophy: to integrate art into nature without dominating it.
Cueva de los Verdes: a journey into the earth
A few kilometers from Jameos, Cueva de los Verdes offers a completely different experience. Here, the protagonist is the volcanic tube in its pure state, barely intervened, masterfully illuminated to reveal forms, textures, and colors that nature took millennia to sculpt. The guided tour covers a kilometer of galleries on two levels, with ceilings ranging from 15 meters to claustrophobic heights.
The cave served as a refuge for the island's inhabitants during pirate attacks in the 16th and 17th centuries. That past is felt in the dimness of its galleries. And at the end of the tour, a masterful optical illusion — which we won't reveal here — leaves all visitors speechless.
Combine both visits in one morning: they are a 5-minute drive from each other. The combined ticket offers a discount. Guided tours of Cueva de los Verdes last 50 minutes and depart every half hour. The interior temperature is around 19 °C, so bring a light layer.
Manrique did not build on nature: he built with it. Jameos del Agua is proof that the most powerful art is that which knows how to listen to the place where it is born.
LIVVO Tip: Avoid peak hours to enjoy the setting in peace.
