The Urban Beach That Rivals Copacabana

There are few cities in the world that can boast a beach like Las Canteras right in the center. Three kilometers of golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and a vibrant promenade make this beach the heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and one of the best urban beaches on the planet, on par with Copacabana or Bondi Beach.

The secret of Las Canteras is La Barra, a natural sandstone reef that runs parallel to the shore about 200 meters from the beach. This natural breakwater creates a lagoon of calm and clear waters in the central area, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It's common to swim alongside schools of sargos, viejas, and even an octopus camouflaged among the rocks.

Three Beaches in One

Las Canteras is divided into three distinct areas. La Puntilla, to the north, is the most sheltered and family-friendly. The central area, protected by La Barra, is the most popular for swimming. And La Cícer, to the south, where La Barra disappears and the waves hit with force, has become the epicenter of city surfing, with schools, board shops, and terrace cafes where surfers recharge.

The sunsets from La Cícer are legendary: the sun sinks into the Atlantic right in front of you, with the silhouette of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium outlined against the sky. The area has a bohemian vibe with art galleries and international cuisine restaurants.

The promenade of Las Canteras is a spectacle in itself: terraces with sea views, beach bars, street musicians, and a statue of tenor Alfredo Kraus that seems to sing to the ocean. On weekends, half of Las Palmas heads to the beach, and this mix of tourists and locals, families and surfers, retirees and students gives Las Canteras an energy that few beaches can match.

Las Canteras is not just a beach: it's the living room of Las Palmas, the place where the city meets itself every day.

LIVVO Tip: The La Barra section is ideal for snorkelling thanks to its calmer waters.
