The City Where Morna Was Born
Mindelo is the soul of Cape Verde. The capital of the island of São Vicente, this port city with colonial streets and vibrant facades is the birthplace of Cesária Évora, the 'barefoot diva' who brought morna — the most emotive musical genre of the archipelago — to stages worldwide. Strolling through Mindelo is like hearing music at every corner, feeling the rhythm in the air, and understanding why this city is called the 'African Lisbon'.
The heart of Mindelo beats around Praça Nova and Rua de Lisboa, where bars and restaurants open their doors at dusk and live music — morna, coladeira, funaná — takes over the city. The Mercado do Peixe, next to the port, is much more than a fish market: it's a gastronomic space where locals come to eat fresh grilled tuna, drink grogue, and socialize.
Carnival, Festivals, and Nightlife
The Carnival of Mindelo is the most spectacular in Cape Verde and one of the most vibrant in the Atlantic. For a week in February, the city transforms into an explosion of color, music, and dance that mixes Brazilian and African influences with an unmistakable unique identity. The parades fill the streets with elaborate costumes, floats, and rhythms that keep everyone moving.
Internal flights from Sal to São Vicente take about 35 minutes. The live music bars in the center (Café Musique, Ponto de Encontro) are must-visits on Friday and Saturday nights. The Bahía das Gatas Festival, in August, brings together the best Cape Verdean musicians on a beach outside the city.
Beyond the music, Mindelo surprises with its architectural heritage: the Torre de Belém (a miniature replica of Lisbon's), the Palácio do Povo, the ruins of the old British coal factory, and the Creole houses with zinc roofs climbing the slopes of Monte Verde. It's a city to get lost in without a map, guided by the sounds and aromas escaping from every open door.
Mindelo is not visited, it is felt. It is the city where Cesária Évora learned to sing saudade, and where every sunset over the bay seems composed for a morna.
LIVVO Tip: Explore the centre in the late afternoon and have dinner at one of its local restaurants.
